What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare particle motion with the direction energy travels. They identify, model, and draw longitudinal and transverse waves, using features such as compressions, rarefactions, crests, and troughs.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a slinky demonstration or diagram, students correctly name the wave type and justify their choice using motion directions. They explain that energy moves through the material while particles vibrate around fixed positions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think particles travel from one end of the wave to the other. They may believe all sideways-looking waves are transverse or all longitudinal waves move horizontally. They also confuse amplitude with wave direction.
How to Assess It
- Show two wave diagrams with arrows for particle motion and energy transfer. Ask students to label each wave type and explain one choice in a sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Stretch a slinky across the floor, then create side-to-side pulses and compression pulses while students track particle and energy directions.
Ask students to explain why a floating cork bobs up and down while a water wave moves across a pond.
Play a card sort matching wave diagrams, particle-motion arrows, vocabulary, and examples of longitudinal or transverse waves.
Compare sound traveling through air with a stadium wave, then have students describe what moves and what stays near its original position.
