What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students put major atomic models in time order and connect each model to the evidence available then. They explain why new evidence led scientists to revise earlier models.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can compare the models of Dalton, Thomson, Rutherford, Bohr, and the modern electron cloud model. They can name the evidence behind major changes and describe each model’s limits.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think each new model proved every earlier idea completely wrong. They may treat the Bohr model as the current model or assume scientists directly saw atomic structures. Some confuse a scientific model with a guess.
How to Assess It
- Show diagrams of Thomson’s and Rutherford’s models. Ask: “What gold foil observation caused scientists to replace Thomson’s model, and what changed in the new model?”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups clay, beads, and cotton to build four atomic models, then label the evidence that caused each model to change.
Ask, “Why did Rutherford’s gold foil results challenge Thomson’s model?” Students answer with a claim and one piece of evidence.
Run a card sort matching Dalton, Thomson, Rutherford, Bohr, and the electron cloud model to diagrams, evidence, and limitations.
Show atom logos from businesses and schools, then have students identify which scientific model each logo resembles and what it gets wrong.
