What Students Need to Do: Students explain how observations and new tools changed models of the solar system. They connect scientists such as Ptolemy, Copernicus, Galileo, and Kepler with specific ideas or evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can place major models and discoveries in order and explain why each change occurred. They use evidence, such as telescope observations or planet motion, to compare Earth-centered and Sun-centered models.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think early scientists relied only on guesses or that one discovery immediately replaced the Earth-centered model. They may also confuse rotation with revolution or think telescope observations proved every detail of modern models.
How to Assess It: Give students four event cards featuring Ptolemy, Copernicus, Galileo, and Kepler. Ask them to order the cards and explain how one piece of evidence changed an earlier model.

Lesson moves

Have groups arrange scientist, model, tool, and evidence cards into a timeline, then revise a solar system diagram after each discovery.
Ask students to write: Why did the Sun-centered model eventually replace the Earth-centered model, even though both explained some observations?
Play a matching game connecting Ptolemy, Copernicus, Galileo, and Kepler to their models, observations, and tools.
Compare Galileo’s Moon sketches with a modern spacecraft image, then list what each source allowed people to conclude.
