What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students select calculations, tables, or graphs that fit a scientific question. They use units, compare values, identify patterns, and use the results to support an answer.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can calculate a quantity such as average speed or density from measured data and label it with correct units. The student can explain what the result and graph show, including whether the data support a claim.

Common Misconceptions

Students may perform a calculation without knowing why it fits the question, drop units, or mix up independent and dependent variables. They may treat one unusual point as a trend or claim that correlation proves cause.

How to Assess It

Give students a table showing distance and time for three toy car trials. Ask them to calculate each speed, identify the fastest trial, and cite the supporting numbers.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Release a toy car down two ramp heights, measure distance and time, calculate speed, and compare results in a bar graph.

  2. Show a cooling data table and ask students which calculation or graph best shows whether cooling was steady, then defend their choice.

  3. Play Data Match with cards showing scientific questions, data tables, formulas, and graph types; teams score by making and explaining correct sets.

  4. Use local weather data to calculate daily temperature ranges, graph one week, and decide which day had the greatest change.
