What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students create diagrams, physical representations, or computer simulations that show how parts of a life system interact. They use the representation to explain evidence, test a change, and make a prediction.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student labels key parts, shows relationships with arrows or rules, and explains what each feature represents. The student changes one condition, makes a supported prediction, compares it with evidence, and names a limitation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a model must look exactly like the real system. They may treat simulation results as proof, ignore assumptions, or include details that do not help explain the process.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket asking students to model particle movement across a cell membrane. Require labels, a prediction after concentration changes, and one limitation of the model.

Ways to Teach It
Use a mesh bag, beads, and marbles to model membrane transport, then label each part and name one limitation.
Show two cell models, then ask, "Which model better explains nutrient movement, and what evidence supports your choice?"
Play Model Match: students pair life process cards with diagrams, predict one change, and earn a point for identifying an assumption.
Exchange water between cups, with one cup containing tonic water, then use a blacklight to trace an outbreak and discuss model limits.
