What Students Need to Do: Students build or choose a model that represents something observed in nature. They use the model to show what happens and explain why.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students make a clear model with labels, arrows, or moving parts. They explain what each part represents, use it to describe the phenomenon, and name one limitation.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think a model must be a small, exact copy or a physical object. They may label parts without showing interactions, or assume every feature matches the real phenomenon.
How to Assess It: Ask students to draw a model showing why a rain puddle disappears on a sunny day. Require labels, arrows, and two sentences explaining the process.

Lesson moves

Use a flashlight and foam ball to model day and night, then have students explain what each object and movement represents.
Show two water cycle diagrams and ask, "Which model explains evaporation better, and what evidence supports your choice?"
Play Model Match by pairing cards showing natural events with diagrams, objects, or computer models that could explain them.
Examine a local weather map and have students explain how its symbols and colors help people predict rain.
