What Students Need to Do: Students build, draw, or act out a simple model of something that happens in nature. They use the model to show parts, movement, or changes in order.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can use a model to explain a process such as runoff, a life cycle, or changing weather. The student points to each part and explains what it represents.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat a model as an exact copy instead of a simpler representation. They may include parts but fail to show movement, change, or the order of events.
How to Assess It: Ask students to draw a model showing what happens to rain after it lands on a hill. Have them add arrows and explain the process in one sentence.

Lesson moves

Shape a hill from clay, spray it with water, and use arrows on sticky notes to mark the path of runoff.
Show a life cycle diagram and ask, “How does each picture help explain what happens next?”
Play a sequence-card relay where teams arrange pictures of a natural process, then act out each stage.
Observe water near a playground drain, then sketch a model showing where the water came from and where it goes.
