What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read science articles, textbook passages, diagrams, and data tables to locate relevant information. They identify key details and explain the information in their own words.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select information that directly answers a science question. They cite the source, interpret related visuals, and give an accurate summary without copying whole sentences.

Common Misconceptions

Students may copy any sentence containing a keyword, even when it does not answer the question. They may ignore captions, diagrams, source details, or the difference between evidence and opinion.

How to Assess It

Give students a short article with one diagram and ask, “What evidence explains how this organism survives in its habitat?” Require two details and source locations.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up stations with an article, field guide, diagram, and data table, then have pairs collect evidence about one organism.

  2. Ask students to write which source detail best answers a question and explain why another detail is less useful.

  3. Play Evidence Sort by having teams place fact cards under relevant, irrelevant, or unsupported headings for a given science question.

  4. Give students a local water quality report and ask them to identify one finding that community members should know.
