What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read grade-appropriate science passages to find a main idea, relevant facts, and technical details. They use headings, diagrams, captions, and context clues to make sense of the information.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can answer a scientific question using accurate details from a passage. They can explain why each selected detail is relevant and summarize the information in their own words.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose an interesting fact that does not answer the question. They may copy whole sentences without explaining them or skip useful information in diagrams, captions, and headings.
How to Assess It
- Give students a 150-word science passage and ask, “What causes the change described?” Have them underline two supporting details and write a two-sentence answer.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a short article, sticky notes, and two highlighters; have them mark the main idea, supporting facts, and unfamiliar terms.
Ask students to write: Which two details best answer the question, and why is each detail relevant?
Run an evidence hunt where teams race to find a fact, definition, diagram label, and cause-and-effect statement in the same passage.
Have students read a local air-quality report and explain what outdoor activity advice the report supports.
