What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read scientific sources and identify relevant claims, evidence, and technical details. They compare sources for credibility, accuracy, and bias, then present a reasoned claim supported by data.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select trustworthy sources, combine related findings, and note disagreements between sources. They cite empirical evidence and clearly explain how it supports their claim.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume a polished website or a .org address is automatically trustworthy. They may copy facts without connecting them, treat opinions as evidence, or choose only evidence that supports their first idea.

How to Assess It

Give students three short source cards about one scientific claim. Ask them to rank the sources, justify the ranking, and write a claim supported by two pieces of evidence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs printed source cards about algae blooms; students highlight claims, circle evidence, and physically sort cards from most to least credible.

  2. Ask, "Should our school ban single-use bottles?" Students write a claim, cite two data points, and explain how each supports it.

  3. Play Source Detective: teams earn points for spotting missing authors, outdated dates, unsupported claims, loaded language, and mismatched evidence.

  4. Compare a health claim from social media with a public health agency page, then decide what advice is safe to share.
