What Students Need to Do: Students observe the sky at different times and describe changes in light and visible objects. They place morning, daytime, evening, and nighttime in a repeating order.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can sort pictures into light-sky and dark-sky groups and explain the choices. The student can sequence parts of a full day and predict what comes next.
Common Misconceptions: Some children think clouds cause nighttime or that the Sun stops shining. They may think the Moon appears only at night or confuse evening with nighttime.
How to Assess It: Give students four pictures showing morning, daytime, evening, and nighttime. Ask them to order the pictures and circle what comes after evening.

Lesson moves

Shine a flashlight on a globe, then have students point to the light side and the dark side.
Ask students to draw what they see outside before school and before bedtime, then compare the two pictures.
Play a picture-sort relay using cards showing activities, clothing, sky colors, the Sun, stars, and the Moon.
Make a class chart of when students eat breakfast, attend school, eat dinner, and sleep across one full day.
