What Students Need to Do: Students observe changes and compare how long they take. They identify changes that happen quickly and changes that take more time.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can sort familiar changes by speed. They can explain their choice using observations, picture sequences, or simple time words.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think slow changes are not happening because they cannot see movement. They may also judge speed by size instead of elapsed time.
How to Assess It: Show pictures of ice melting, paper tearing, a plant growing, and a building being built. Ask students to sort them and explain one choice.

Lesson moves

Tear paper, melt an ice cube, and record which change finishes first using drawings at timed intervals.
Ask students to draw one quick change and one slow change, then explain how they know.
Play a picture-card sorting game with examples such as popping a balloon, rusting metal, growing hair, and slicing fruit.
Compare dated photos of a local construction project and discuss what changed between each photo.
