What Students Need to Do: Students observe the same living or nonliving thing at two or more times. They describe changes using pictures, counts, comparisons, or simple measurements.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students identify what stayed the same and what changed. They support their answer with evidence such as height, number, color, shape, or size.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call any difference a change, even when they are comparing two different objects. They may think change always means getting bigger or use guesses instead of observations and measurements.
How to Assess It: Read this exit prompt: “A plant was 4 cubes tall Monday and 7 cubes tall Friday. What changed, and how do you know?”

Lesson moves

Place an ice cube on a tray, trace the puddle edge every two minutes, and compare size changes.
Show two photos of the same tree in different seasons; ask, “What changed, and what details prove it?”
Play Change Match: students pair before-and-after picture cards, then name one observable or measurable change.
Mark one student's shadow with chalk morning and afternoon, then compare each length using linking cubes.
