What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use formulas and particle models to show the substances present before and after a reaction. They interpret coefficients, plus signs, and arrows, then compare atom counts on both sides.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a simple equation, students correctly label reactants and products and explain the arrow as “produces.” They count each type of atom on both sides and describe atoms as rearranged, not created or destroyed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat the arrow as an equals sign or think plus means ordinary addition. They may confuse coefficients with subscripts and change a subscript to make atom counts match. Some think products contain newly created atoms rather than rearranged atoms.
How to Assess It
- Give students 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O. Ask them to label reactants and products, explain each symbol, and count hydrogen and oxygen atoms on each side.

Ways to Teach It
Use colored beads and pipe cleaners to build reactant molecules, then rearrange the same beads to make product molecules.
Ask students to write: “How can a substance change if every atom is still present after the reaction?”
Run a card sort matching equations with particle diagrams, reactant and product labels, and written reaction descriptions.
Mix vinegar and baking soda in a sealed bag, then use a provided equation to identify the substances before and after mixing.
