What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students sort atomic models by element and explain what makes each group alike. They use proton count or element identity to distinguish one element from another.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student correctly groups several models of the same element, even when neutron or electron counts vary. The student identifies different elements by their different proton counts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think atoms of one element must be identical in every way. They may also use electron count, model color, or physical size instead of proton count to identify an element.
How to Assess It
- Give students four labeled atomic models and ask, “Which two represent the same element, and what evidence proves it?”

Build atoms with counters for protons, neutrons, and electrons, then sort the models by element using proton count.
Write a response to the prompt, “Can two atoms be the same element without being exactly identical? Explain with an example.”
Play Atom Match by pairing model cards that show the same proton count but different neutron or electron counts.
Compare carbon atoms in pencil graphite and charcoal, then explain why both materials contain the same element despite looking different.
