What Students Need to Do: Students explain how vibrations carry energy through matter as sound waves. They identify the vibrating source, the material carrying the waves, and the receiver.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can trace sound from a vibrating object to a listener or another object. They can use movement, such as jumping rice, as evidence that energy was transferred.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think sound is matter moving from the source to the listener. They may also think sound can travel through empty space or that only loud sounds carry energy.
How to Assess It: Ask students to draw and label how a struck drum makes rice on a nearby tray move. Require them to identify the source, medium, and evidence of energy transfer.

Lesson moves

Stretch plastic wrap over a bowl, add rice grains, then place a playing speaker nearby and observe the rice movement.
Ask students to explain how a ringing phone can cause both an eardrum and a nearby object to vibrate.
Give groups source, medium, and receiver cards, then have them race to build accurate sound pathways.
Make string telephones with paper cups, then connect their operation to phones, hearing aids, or classroom intercoms.
