What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a need or frustration into a clear problem for designers to solve. They identify the user, goal, success criteria, and limits such as materials, time, size, or cost.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a situation, students can write a focused problem with a user, goal, criteria, and constraints. They can explain how the problem could be addressed and revise one that is too broad.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often propose a solution before clearly identifying the problem. They may confuse criteria with constraints, omit the user, or choose problems that cannot be tested with available resources.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “Our class plants dry out over long weekends. Write a design problem with a user, goal, two criteria, and one constraint.”

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a leaking paper cup, foil, tape, and straws, then have them inspect it and write a testable design problem.
Ask, “What makes a problem useful to an engineer?” Students compare two problem statements and defend which one is clearer.
Play Problem or Solution: students sort scenario cards, then rewrite each solution statement as a clear design problem.
Have students examine cafeteria food waste and draft a problem for a process that reduces waste during a one-week test.
