What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students notice an everyday difficulty and name the specific problem. They explain how a new tool or a change to an existing object could help solve it.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can identify who has the problem, what makes the task difficult, and what needs to improve. The student connects a useful tool feature to the problem.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name a broad wish, such as stopping rain, instead of a problem people can address. They may suggest an object without explaining how it helps, or propose only decorative changes.

How to Assess It

Give this exit ticket: “Pencils keep rolling off a student’s desk. Identify the problem, then sketch and label a tool or improvement that could help.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs cardboard, tape, cups, and straws to build a device that keeps three pencils from rolling off a desk.

  2. Show a backpack with a broken zipper and ask students to write who has a problem, what it is, and what could help.

  3. Students sort scenario cards into “a tool could help” and “a tool would not help,” then explain one choice.

  4. Take a classroom walk, have students spot one difficult task, and propose a new tool or object improvement on a sticky note.
