What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify a specific need that could be met by making or improving something. They ask questions about the user, purpose, limits, and signs of success.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can name who has the problem, what needs to change, and what a successful solution should do. They keep the problem narrow enough to solve with available materials.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a solution instead of defining the problem, such as saying, “Build a box.” They may choose problems that are too broad or leave out who needs help.
How to Assess It
- Give students this prompt: “Our classroom headphones become tangled in a basket.” Ask them to define the design problem and write two clarifying questions.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups a tray of scattered crayons and limited materials, then have them define a storage problem before building anything.
Ask students to write: Who has the problem, what needs to change, and how will we know a solution works?
Have students sort cards into design problems, science questions, and proposed solutions, then revise one misplaced card.
Walk around the classroom, identify one recurring problem, and write a design problem that names the user and need.
