What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a need into a clear problem statement. They identify the user, desired result, success criteria, and limits such as time, cost, or materials.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can describe a problem without jumping straight to one solution. The student can explain how a proposed object, tool, process, or system would address the need.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name a solution instead of defining the problem, such as saying, “Build a ramp.” They may confuse success criteria with limits or leave out the user.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Students keep spilling water near the classroom sink. Define the problem, name the user, and list one success criterion and one limit.”

Ways to Teach It
Have teams inspect the classroom, choose one problem, and record the user, need, success criteria, and limits on sticky notes.
Ask students to write: “What makes a design problem clear enough for another team to solve?”
Give pairs problem cards to sort as clear or unclear, then have them revise two unclear examples.
Observe a crowded backpack storage area, then define a problem that could be addressed with an object, process, or system.
