What Students Need to Do

Students turn observations into questions they can investigate with available materials and measurable evidence. They use patterns to predict results, state a cause-and-effect hypothesis, and describe a problem that a designed solution could address.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given an observation, a student identifies what to change, what to measure, and what to keep the same. The student gives a pattern-based prediction, writes an if-then-because hypothesis, and frames a design need without choosing the solution first.

Common Misconceptions

Students often write questions that are opinions, too broad, or impossible to test in class. They may call a guess a prediction without citing a pattern, or reverse cause and effect in a hypothesis. For design work, they may name an object to build instead of stating the need it should meet.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: “Three identical ice cubes melt in 8, 12, and 16 minutes when wrapped in zero, one, and two felt layers. Write a testable question, pattern-based prediction, if-then-because hypothesis, and design problem.”

   Give groups warm and cold water with sugar cubes, then have them write one measurable question and a cause-and-effect hypothesis.

   Post a photo of a flooded playground and ask students to write the need, users, criteria, and limits for a possible solution.

   Play Testable or Not: teams sort question cards, revise two untestable questions, and earn points for naming the measured variable.

   Examine cafeteria food waste data, identify a pattern, predict the next day’s waste, and define a problem a new process could solve.
