What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice details, ask a question, and tell what they think will happen next. They also name a problem and suggest a tool or object change that could help.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student asks a question connected to what was observed and gives a sensible prediction. The student can describe a problem, sketch a helpful tool or change, and explain how it helps.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may give a guess that does not connect to what they observed, or state a fact instead of asking a question. They may suggest a decorative change that does not solve the named problem.
How to Assess It
- Show a paper cup that bends easily. Ask students to write or draw one question, predict what happens when it is filled, and sketch a helpful improvement.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs an ice cube, a tray, and a timer, then have them observe, ask one question, and predict what will happen.
Show a backpack with a broken strap and ask, “What is the problem, and what change would help?”
Play Question or Prediction by reading statement cards and having students hold up a Q or P card.
Inspect classroom tools, then choose one tool and draw a change that would make a daily task easier.
