What Students Need to Do: Students examine fossil shapes, body parts, and tracks to identify what kind of organism may have left them. They use these clues to infer whether the setting was an ocean, swamp, forest, or another environment.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a fossil image or replica, students can name visible features and make a reasonable claim about the organism and its habitat. They support the claim with specific fossil evidence.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think all fossils come from dinosaurs or that fossils are the original bones. They may assume an area's present environment has always been the same. They may also treat an inference as a proven fact.
How to Assess It: Show a photo of a shell fossil found in inland rock. Ask students to name the visible clue, infer the past environment, and explain their evidence.

Lesson moves

Press shells, leaves, and toy animal feet into clay, swap impressions, and identify the organism and likely habitat from visible clues.
Discuss: A shell fossil was found on a mountain; what does it suggest about the past environment, and which clue supports your claim?
Play Fossil Match by pairing fossil cards with organism and habitat cards, then require one evidence statement for each match.
Examine photos of Virginia marine fossils and explain why places that are now dry land may once have been underwater.
