What Students Need to Do: Students examine fossils, rock layers, and maps for patterns. They use those patterns to explain how an environment or landform changed over time.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can compare clues from several rock layers and describe a likely sequence of past conditions. The student supports each claim with a specific fossil or rock pattern.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think fossils are only dinosaur bones or that Earth’s surface has always looked the same. They may assume one clue proves a claim or that all changes happened suddenly.
How to Assess It: Show a cliff diagram with shell fossils in lower layers and leaf fossils in upper layers. Ask, “How did this environment change, and what evidence supports your answer?”

Lesson moves

Layer sand and clay with shell and leaf models, then cut a cross-section and use the clues to order environmental changes.
Show a marine fossil found on a mountain and ask students to write how it could have arrived there.
Play a card sort matching fossil and rock-layer clues to ocean, swamp, forest, or desert environments, then defend each match.
Use photographs of a nearby roadcut or state park to identify visible layers and infer what changed over time.
