What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students turn a solution idea into a labeled sketch or basic three-dimensional build. They use shapes, arrows, and labels to show parts, steps, and how the idea works.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a problem, a student creates a model that others can interpret without coaching. The student explains each feature's purpose and improves the model after feedback.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may make an attractive picture that does not show how the idea works. They may think a model must be full-sized or operational, or they may omit needed labels, arrows, or steps.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Design a tool that keeps pencils from rolling off a desk. Draw and label the model, add arrows if needed, and explain how it works in one sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs cardboard, tape, straws, and cups to build a prototype tool that moves a cotton ball without touching it.
Ask, "How does your model show what happens first, next, and last?" Students write three sentences and compare with a partner.
Play Model Match: students match diagrams to function cards, then add two labels or arrows that make each model clearer.
Examine a can opener, then sketch one improvement for safer use and label how the changed part would work.
