What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use arrows, labels, and movable parts to show cause, change, or motion. They build or draw a design so another person can see how it is meant to work.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can point to each part of a diagram or prototype and explain what it represents. The model shows the correct order, movement, or cause and effect.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a model must look exactly like the real object. They may draw an unlabeled picture that does not show movement or change. They may also confuse the model with the real process.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw and label a barrier that could slow soil washing downhill. Add arrows to show water movement and explain how the barrier works.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a tray, soil, water, craft sticks, and clay to build a hillside model and test a barrier that slows erosion.
Show a water cycle diagram, then have students write what each arrow means and name one part of the real process that is missing.
Play Model Match with cards showing models, labels, and explanations, then have students pair each model with the process it best represents.
Have students sketch a playground shade structure, label its parts, and use arrows to show where sunlight is blocked.
