Students create drawings or object models that show the main parts of a natural event or process. They use the model to describe changes, explain movement, or predict what happens next.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a process, a student includes key objects and shows order or movement with arrows or labels. The student uses the model to explain what happens and make a sensible prediction.

Common Misconceptions

Students may build a detailed scene that does not show movement, sequence, or cause. They may treat a model as an exact copy and think every feature must match nature.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Draw a model showing what happens to a puddle on a sunny day. Add labels and arrows, then write one sentence explaining the change.

   Use clay, gravel, a tray, and a spray bottle to model rain moving soil downhill, then sketch the changes.

   Show two models of seed growth and ask, Which model best explains the changes, and what evidence supports your choice?
