Virginia SOL 2.5

2.5 is a Standards of Learning science standard. These are the key ideas and practices under it.

What Students Need to Do

Students identify how plants and animals depend on air, water, sunlight, soil, food, shelter, and one another. They predict how a habitat change affects living things.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a habitat picture, students can label an animal’s basic needs and show where each need is met. They can explain one effect of drought, construction, pollution, or seasonal change.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think a habitat is only an animal’s shelter or that nonliving parts do not matter. They may think animals can live anywhere or that habitat changes are always caused by people.

How to Assess It

Show a pond picture and ask: Name one frog need met here, one living or nonliving connection, and one result if the pond dries up.

   Build a shoebox habitat with models of an animal, food, water, shelter, plants, sunlight, and soil.

   Study a forest picture, then write: What would change if insects disappeared, and why?

   Play Habitat Match by pairing animal cards with habitat cards and naming how each habitat meets the animal’s needs.
