What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find the smallest chunk that repeats and tell what should come next. They continue the pattern for two full repeats, then make and describe their own.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given red, blue, blue, red, blue, blue, a student identifies red, blue, blue as the core. The student adds two full repeats and builds another pattern with a clear core.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call the whole row the core instead of finding the smallest repeating chunk. They may add only the next item rather than two full repeats. Some change the order or add new items while extending the pattern.
How to Assess It
- Show ★●●★●● followed by six empty boxes. Ask students to circle the core, fill the boxes, and tell what repeats.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs buttons, cubes, and craft sticks to build a repeating strip, circle its core, and add two more complete repeats.
Show red-blue-blue-red-blue-blue and ask, “What repeats, and how do you know where the repeat begins and ends?”
Play Pattern Detective: reveal one card at a time, then students predict the next three cards and earn a point for explaining.
Examine stripes on socks, wrapping paper, or floor tiles, then sketch one real pattern and mark the part that repeats.
