Knowledge and Skills in This Standard
1.PFA.1 is a Standards of Learning standard. These are the knowledge and skills expectations under it.
- 1.PFA.1.a
Identify and describe repeating and increasing patterns.
- 1.PFA.1.b
Analyze a repeating or increasing pattern and generalize the change to extend the pattern using objects, colors, movements, pictures, or geometric figures.
- 1.PFA.1.c
Create a repeating or increasing pattern using objects, pictures, movements, colors, or geometric figures.
- 1.PFA.1.d
Transfer a repeating or increasing pattern from one form to another.

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find what repeats or how a pattern grows, then use that rule to continue it. They make their own patterns and show the same rule with objects, drawings, colors, shapes, or movements.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students name the repeating unit or explain how each step grows. They extend the pattern correctly, create their own, and represent the same rule with different materials or actions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may copy the last item instead of applying the rule. They may confuse a growing pattern with a repeating pattern, or change several features when transferring it.
How to Assess It
- Give students the sequence 1 dot, 2 dots, 3 dots. Ask them to draw the next two steps, state the rule, and show the same pattern with blocks.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs cubes, buttons, and shape tiles to build, extend, and trade repeating and growing patterns for a partner to solve.
Show three pattern steps and ask, "What changes each time, and what will the next two steps look like?"
Play Pattern Detective by hiding one item or step in a pattern and having students choose and explain the missing part.
Study repeating designs on clothing or growing rows of seats, then recreate one pattern with classroom objects.
