What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use a calendar to talk about days, weeks, and months. They name weekdays and months in order, find days before and after, and tell the two groups apart.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students name the seven weekdays and twelve months in order. Given any weekday, they name the day before and after it. They explain that calendars track days, weeks, and months.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may mix up weekday names and month names. They may think the week starts with today, or confuse before with after. Some know the names but not their correct order.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket: A week has __ days; before Friday is __; after Friday is __; a year has __ months; circle the month, Tuesday or March.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs weekday cards and month cards to sort, then place each set in order beside a classroom calendar.
Ask, “How are a week and a year different?” and have students draw and label one fact about each.
Play Calendar Detective by naming a day or month, then having students point to the one before or after on card strips.
Mark a class event or birthday on the calendar, then count the days until it and name its month.
