What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students tell and represent time to the nearest five minutes on analog and digital clocks. They match clock faces to written times and count minutes by fives. They also compare minutes, hours, days, and weeks to choose a sensible unit for an activity.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students read, show, and write times such as 1:35, 6:20, and 9:05 on both clock types. They count around an analog clock by fives and place both hands correctly. They know 60 minutes make an hour, 24 hours make a day, and choose sensible time units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse the hour and minute hands or read each minute mark as five minutes. They may write 9:05 as 9:5 or move the hour hand directly onto the next number. They may also choose hours for short activities or minutes for activities lasting several days.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket with a printed clock showing 7:20, a blank clock labeled 4:35, and the question, “Would recess be measured in minutes, hours, days, or weeks? Explain.” Add two facts to complete: one hour equals ___ minutes, and one day equals ___ hours.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs paper clocks and time cards, then have one student build each time while the partner checks both hands.
Ask students to explain whether brushing teeth, sleeping overnight, and summer vacation should be measured in minutes, hours, days, or weeks.
Play clock match with analog clock cards, digital time cards, and written time cards, awarding a point for each correct set.
Use the class schedule to calculate whether each activity is best described in minutes or hours, then record several times on paper clocks.
