What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect the numbers in a written time to the positions of the hour and minute hands. They count around the clock by fives and check where the hour hand belongs.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly choose an analog clock for times ending in 00, 05, 10, and each later five-minute interval. They use the minute hand first, then check that the hour hand sits in a reasonable position.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may count minute marks by ones instead of by fives. They may place the hour hand directly on the hour number even when several minutes have passed, or confuse 9:05 with 9:50.
How to Assess It
- Give students three clock faces and the written time 2:35. Ask them to circle the matching clock and explain what each hand shows.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs mini clocks, display written times such as 3:15 and 7:45, and have students set both hands for each time.
Show two clocks for 4:40 and ask, “Which clock matches, and how do the hands prove your answer?”
Make a memory game with written-time cards and analog-clock cards for students to match, including pairs such as 8:05 and 8:50.
List four times from the class schedule, then have students draw matching analog clocks beside arrival, lunch, recess, and dismissal.
