Virginia SOL 7.MG.2.h
The Standard
Apply proportional reasoning to solve problems in context including scale drawings. Scale factors shall have denominators no greater than 12 and decimals no less than tenths.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will solve problems and justify relationships of similarity using proportional reasoning.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use a given scale to find missing lengths in drawings and real settings. They write equivalent ratios, calculate accurately, and explain why their method works.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students set up equivalent ratios with matching units and find missing drawing or actual measurements. They label answers with units and explain how the scale factor supports the result.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse the scale ratio or mix units within a proportion. They may add the scale factor instead of multiplying, or apply it to only one dimension.
How to Assess It
- Give students a drawing where 1 inch represents 6 feet and a wall measures 4.5 inches. Ask for the actual length and a written justification.

Ways to Teach It
Measure a desk, then create a graph-paper scale drawing where 1 centimeter represents 10 centimeters and label every dimension.
Compare two map-distance solutions, one using a proportion and one using a scale factor, then explain why both methods work.
Run a card match: pair each scale drawing with its actual dimensions, then solve one missing measure to keep the pair.
Use a local park map scale to calculate the walking distance along a marked route and report the answer with units.
