The Standard

Draw polygons in the coordinate plane given coordinates for the vertices; use coordinates to determine the length of a side joining points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate. Ordered pairs will be limited to coordinates expressed as integers. Apply these techniques in the context of solving contextual and mathematical problems.

Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will describe the characteristics of the coordinate plane and graph ordered pairs.

What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students plot integer ordered pairs as vertices and connect them in the stated order to draw a polygon. They find horizontal and vertical side lengths from coordinate differences, then use those lengths to solve problems.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately plot vertices and connect them in the given order to form a polygon. They find horizontal and vertical side lengths by comparing the matching coordinates and can use those lengths in a word problem.

Common Misconceptions

Students may reverse the x- and y-coordinates when plotting points. They may count grid lines instead of unit spaces or subtract coordinates without using the positive difference. Some apply the horizontal or vertical method to diagonal sides.

How to Assess It

Give an exit ticket: Plot A(-3, 2), B(4, 2), C(4, -2), and D(-3, -2), connect them in order, and label each side length.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build a floor coordinate plane with masking tape; students stand at assigned vertices, connect yarn, and measure horizontal and vertical side lengths.

  2. Ask students to explain why the distance between (-4, 3) and (2, 3) is 6, not -6 or 7.

  3. Run a polygon relay where teams draw coordinate cards, plot each vertex, connect the polygon, and label every horizontal or vertical side.

  4. Have students design a rectangular dog park on a coordinate map, then calculate each side length and the total fencing needed.
