Virginia SOL 6.MG.3.d
The Standard
Identify ordered pairs represented by points in the four quadrants and on the axes of the coordinate plane. Ordered pairs will be limited to coordinates expressed as integers.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will describe the characteristics of the coordinate plane and graph ordered pairs.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read the horizontal value first and the vertical value second for each plotted point. They use positive values, negative values, and zero to describe locations accurately.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly name points anywhere on a coordinate plane, including the origin and points on either axis. They explain that x comes first and identify which coordinate must be zero on each axis.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may reverse the x- and y-values or ignore negative signs. They may also think every point has two nonzero coordinates, forgetting that axis points contain a zero.
How to Assess It
- Give students a coordinate plane with points at (-3, 4), (0, -5), (2, 0), and (-4, -2). Ask them to write each ordered pair.

Ways to Teach It
Tape a large coordinate grid on the floor, place counters at integer locations, and have students name each coordinate before checking the axis labels.
Display an unlabeled point in Quadrant II and ask, “Which coordinate comes first, and how do its signs show the location?”
Play Coordinate Bingo with cards showing plotted points, then require winners to read back the ordered pair for every matched point.
Use a town map on a coordinate grid, then have students report the integer locations of the school, park, and bus stop.
