The Standard

Graph ordered pairs in the four quadrants and on the axes of a coordinate plane. Ordered pairs will be limited to coordinates expressed as integers.

Teacher's field guide

What Students Need to Do: Students use the first coordinate to move left or right, then use the second coordinate to move up or down. They plot integer-coordinate points, including points on either axis.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students accurately locate and label points with positive, negative, or zero coordinates. They use the x-coordinate first and place axis points correctly.
Common Misconceptions: Students may reverse the x- and y-coordinates or move vertically before moving horizontally. They may also misread negative values or think points on an axis belong in a quadrant.
How to Assess It: Give students the points (−4, 2), (3, −5), (0, 4), and (−2, 0). Ask them to plot and label each point on a blank coordinate plane.

Lesson moves

Tape a large coordinate plane on the floor, then have students stand at ordered pairs drawn from a card stack.
Show an incorrectly plotted point and ask students to write where the error occurred and how to fix it.
Play Coordinate Bingo by calling ordered pairs while students mark matching locations on coordinate-plane boards.
Map classroom objects with integer coordinates, then have partners use the coordinates to locate each object.
