Virginia SOL 6.CE.2.b
The Standard
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide two integers.*
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will estimate, demonstrate, solve, and justify solutions to problems using operations with integers, including those in context.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students calculate with positive integers, negative integers, and zero using all four operations. They use models, patterns, or operation rules to explain each answer and its sign.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose the correct sign and compute accurately, including calculations involving zero. They can explain subtraction as adding the opposite and justify multiplication and division signs with patterns.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often add absolute values when signs differ or treat subtraction as commutative. They may assume two negatives always make a positive or try to divide by zero.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Evaluate -7 + 12, 4 - (-9), -6 × 5, and -42 ÷ (-7). Explain how you found the sign of one answer.

Ways to Teach It
Use two-color counters to model five integer addition and subtraction problems, then match each model to an equation.
Ask students to explain why 4 - (-3) equals 7 using words, a number line, or counters.
Play Integer Target: students draw two signed-number cards and choose an operation to make a target value.
Give students a bank balance of $20, then apply deposits, withdrawals, and fees to find the new balance.
