Virginia SOL 6.CE.2.a
The Standard
Demonstrate/model addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of integers using pictorial representations or concrete manipulatives.*
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will estimate, demonstrate, solve, and justify solutions to problems using operations with integers, including those in context.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students build or draw integer models with two-color counters, number lines, or signed groups. They use each model to find the result and explain what the counters, arrows, or groups mean.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a fitting model, represent both signs correctly, and reach the correct value for each operation. They explain zero pairs, direction changes, and equal groups without relying only on a memorized sign rule.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat every minus sign as subtraction rather than as a negative sign. They may remove counters that are not present instead of adding zero pairs, or move left for every subtraction. They may memorize sign rules but draw models that conflict with their answers.
How to Assess It
- On an exit ticket, have students draw models and solve: -3 + 5, 2 - 6, (-4)(3), and (-12) ÷ (-3). Under each model, they explain how it shows the operation and sign.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs two-color counters and four operation cards; students build each model, add zero pairs when needed, and record the matching equation.
Ask students to compare drawings for -4 + 7 and 7 - 4, then explain why the results match.
Play Model Match: students pair equation cards with counter or number-line cards, then defend one match to a partner.
Use a bank ledger with deposits, withdrawals, repeated fees, and equal repayments; students model each change before calculating the balance.
