Virginia SOL 8.PFA.1.a
The Standard
Represent algebraic expressions using concrete manipulatives or pictorial representations (e.g., colored chips, algebra tiles), including expressions that apply the distributive property.
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will represent, simplify, and generate equivalent algebraic expressions in one variable.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use variable tiles and unit tiles to show terms, coefficients, constants, and signs. They arrange equal groups, sketch the model, and write the matching expanded expression.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can build or draw a given expression with correctly labeled variable and unit tiles. They can use the model to write an equivalent expression and explain how each group was distributed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may read 3(x + 2) as 3x + 2 because they multiply only the first term. They may also confuse variable tiles with unit tiles or lose negative signs when drawing tiles.
How to Assess It
- On an exit ticket, ask: Draw an algebra tile model for 3(x - 2), then write an equivalent expanded expression and explain each term.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs algebra tiles to build 3(x + 2), then rearrange and record the matching expanded expression 3x + 6.
Show models for 2(x - 3) and 2x - 6, then ask students to explain why both show the same value.
Run a card match with sets showing a tile model, a factored expression, and its expanded equivalent.
Model four snack bags containing x crackers and two grapes each, then draw the groups and write 4(x + 2).
