What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use clocks, timelines, or time jumps to find a missing start time, end time, or duration. They solve one-step and multistep situations, including times that cross noon.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify whether the missing value is the start, end, or duration. They calculate accurately across noon, regroup 60 minutes as one hour, and label a.m. or p.m. correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat an hour as 100 minutes or subtract clock digits without regrouping. They may switch a.m. and p.m. at 12 incorrectly. In multistep problems, they may skip one time interval or confuse start time with elapsed time.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “A trip began at 10:35 a.m. and lasted 3 hours. What time did it end?” Ask students to show clock jumps.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs geared clocks and time cards, then have them model each trip and record jumps by hours and minutes.
Ask students to compare a number line solution with a clock solution and explain which makes crossing noon clearer.
Play a matching game where students connect cards showing a start time, an end time, and the correct duration.
Use a school event schedule to calculate arrival times, activity lengths, and when students must leave for the next event.
