Virginia SOL 2.PS.1.d
The Standard
Organize and represent a data set using a bar graph with a title and labeled axes (limited to 25 or fewer data points for up to six categories, and limit increments of scale to multiples of 1 or 2).
Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics · The student will apply the data cycle (pose questions; collect or acquire data; organize and represent data; and analyze data and communicate results) with a focus on pictographs and bar graphs.

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students sort a small data set into categories and count each group. They create a bar graph with a clear title, labeled axes, and a scale counting by ones or twos.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can turn a tally chart or list into an accurate bar graph without help. The graph has a useful title, correct axis labels, equal spacing, and bars that match each category total.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may switch the category and number labels or leave off the title. They may draw bars with incorrect heights, uneven widths, or gaps that do not match the scale. Some count each line as one when the scale counts by twos.
How to Assess It
- Give these pet votes: cats 6, dogs 8, fish 2, birds 4. Ask students to draw a complete bar graph using a scale of two.

Ways to Teach It
Survey classmates about four favorite fruits, sort sticky-note votes, and build a bar graph on chart paper.
Show a graph with a missing title and incorrect bar height, then ask students to write two corrections.
Play Graph Match by pairing data cards with matching bar graph cards, then checking titles, labels, scales, and bar heights.
Record the class weather for ten school days, then graph the number of sunny, cloudy, rainy, and snowy days.
