The Standard
Describe the relationship between the number of fractional parts needed to make a whole and the size of the parts (i.e., as the whole is divided into more parts, each part becomes smaller).

- Students compare equal parts made from wholes of the same size. They explain that creating more equal pieces makes each piece smaller.

- Students correctly order halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, and eighths by piece size when the wholes match. They justify comparisons using the number of equal parts.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think eighths are larger than fourths because eight is greater than four. They may count unequal pieces as fractions or compare pieces from different-sized wholes.
How to Assess It
- Show two equal-sized rectangles, one split into thirds and one into sixths. Ask, “Which has larger pieces, and how do you know?”
