What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students locate major regions, landforms, bodies of water, and cities across Russia and Central Asia. They connect physical geography to cultural patterns, environmental change, economic activity, and trade.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately label key places on a blank map and compare regions using specific evidence. They explain how climate, resources, and location shape settlement, work, culture, and trade.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often treat Russia and Central Asia as one uniform region or place all major cities in European Russia. They may confuse climate with landforms or assume natural resources always create widespread wealth.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank regional map and ask them to label five assigned features. Then have them explain how one feature affects settlement or trade.

Ways to Teach It
Build a layered map with tracing paper for physical features, cities, cultures, resources, and trade routes, then compare where patterns overlap.
Ask students to write: How does location help one city grow while limiting another? Use two mapped examples.
Play a map relay where teams place city, landform, climate, and resource cards in the correct locations and justify each choice.
Examine a natural gas pipeline map and trace how resources move from production areas to regional and global markets.
