What Students Need to Do: Students locate major European cities and sort them into Northern, Southern, Eastern, or Western Europe using class map conventions. They describe locations using nearby countries, waters, rivers, and landforms.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given an unlabeled map, a student accurately marks the four regions and places major cities near their correct locations. The student can compare two cities using direction, distance, and nearby features.
Common Misconceptions: Students may label London as a country, confuse England with the United Kingdom, or assume every European country belongs to the European Union. They may place cities at country centers and overlook coastal, river, or border locations.
How to Assess It: Give students a blank Europe map. Ask them to label the four regions, plot London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Athens, and Moscow, then describe one city using two location clues.

Lesson moves

Students assemble a tabletop Europe map from country tiles, shade four geographic regions, and place labeled city counters.
Ask students to explain how a river, coast, or trade route helps explain the location of one major European city.
Play map relay: teams draw a city card, place it on a laminated map, name its region, and give one location clue.
