What Students Need to Do: Students locate East Asian countries, physical regions, and major cities on maps and globes. They describe relative locations and explain patterns such as coastal settlement and natural barriers.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students accurately label places such as China, Japan, the Korean Peninsula, the Gobi Desert, Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Seoul. They use direction, distance, and nearby features to compare locations.
Common Misconceptions: Students often confuse North Korea with South Korea, place Tokyo on the Asian mainland, or switch Beijing and Shanghai. They may also treat East Asia as one physical region instead of recognizing deserts, plains, plateaus, peninsulas, and islands.
How to Assess It: Give students a blank East Asia map. Ask them to label four physical or political regions and four cities, then write two accurate location comparisons.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a cut-up map of East Asia to assemble, then have them label countries, physical regions, and cities with sticky notes.
Ask students to write which major East Asian city has the most strategic location, using two nearby geographic features as evidence.
Play map clue bingo using prompts such as, Find the city east of the Korean Peninsula or north of Shanghai.
Plot a rail or shipping route from Beijing to Tokyo, naming the countries, bodies of water, and physical barriers crossed.
