What Students Need to Do: Students identify the main roles a town or city played during different periods. They explain how transportation, industry, technology, and population changes caused those roles to shift.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can compare one city in two time periods and describe how its economic or social role changed. They support the explanation with specific evidence and a clear cause.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think cities keep the same role as they grow. They may confuse population growth with a change in function or name a change without explaining its cause.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: A river trading town later became a railroad manufacturing center. Name its function in each period and explain what caused the change.

Lesson moves

Build a city timeline using labeled cards for port, factory, railroad, government, tourism, and technology functions.
Write: How might a new highway or factory change the jobs and services found in a town?
Sort city descriptions by function, then match each city with the event that could change its role.
Compare old and current maps of a nearby city, then list evidence showing how land use and jobs changed.
