What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students place major Cold War events in sequence and explain how each reflected containment. They compare military action, aid, diplomacy, and political pressure, then connect leaders' decisions to outcomes.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can explain the causes, U.S. response, and results of each major event using accurate details. They can compare Kennedy's and Khrushchev's choices and explain how events in Eastern Europe weakened communist rule.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the United States and Soviet Union fought each other directly throughout the Cold War. They may also confuse Korea with Vietnam or assume the Berlin Wall's fall immediately ended communism everywhere.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Choose one major Cold War event. In three sentences, identify the threat, describe the U.S. response, and state one result.
