What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how Soviet economic problems, public protests, and political reforms weakened communist control. They connect Reagan’s pressure and diplomacy with Gorbachev’s reforms and reduced military control. They place major events in order and explain cause and effect.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can explain how perestroika and glasnost changed Soviet society. They can describe Reagan’s defense buildup, public challenges, and negotiations with Gorbachev. They use events such as the Berlin Wall opening and the Soviet Union dissolving as evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may claim Reagan alone caused the Soviet collapse or confuse him with Gorbachev. They may treat the Berlin Wall opening as the only cause rather than a result. Some think communism disappeared everywhere after 1991.
How to Assess It
- Give students four terms: Reagan, Gorbachev, Berlin Wall, and Soviet economy. Ask them to write three connected sentences explaining how the terms relate.

Ways to Teach It
Have groups arrange event cards from Soviet economic decline through the 1991 dissolution, then add cause-and-effect arrows between cards.
Ask students to write: Which mattered more, outside pressure from Reagan or reforms under Gorbachev? Support your answer with two facts.
Play a matching game pairing Reagan and Gorbachev with specific policies, speeches, reforms, negotiations, and effects.
Compare a 1988 European map with a current map, then label three countries changed by the breakup of communist control.
