What Students Need to Do: Students identify examples of trade, shared knowledge, alliances, and conflict between Indigenous peoples and Europeans. They explain how land, resources, beliefs, and economic goals shaped these interactions.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given an account of an encounter, students can classify it as cooperation, conflict, or both and cite supporting details. They can compare viewpoints and explain a clear cause and effect.
Common Misconceptions: Students may assume every interaction was hostile or that cooperation meant both sides had equal power. They may treat Indigenous peoples as one group with one culture. They may overlook competition for land and resources as causes of conflict.
How to Assess It: Use an exit ticket: “Describe one interaction that led to cooperation and one that led to conflict. Explain the cause of each outcome.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs cards for corn, furs, tools, land, and military aid, then have them negotiate trades and record who benefits.
Ask students to write two diary entries about one trade meeting, one from an Indigenous viewpoint and one from a European viewpoint.
Play a cause-and-effect matching game using cards for trade, alliances, disease, land claims, resource competition, cooperation, and conflict.
Use a printed Virginia map to trace a traded item from an Indigenous community to a European settlement and explain its value.
